Choose the work first

List the applications you need, how often you carry the laptop and whether it will spend most of its time at a desk. Compare the exact processor, memory, storage and screen in the listing, rather than the model family alone.

Ask what refurbished means

Ask the seller what has been inspected, what was replaced and how cosmetic condition is graded. Request the battery condition and confirm that the charger and any accessories you need are included.

Keep the terms with the listing

Save the warranty and returns information for that seller and that item. Apple’s UK Certified Refurbished page, for example, describes its own testing and warranty programme; another seller’s programme may differ. This is a buying checklist, not a hands-on review.

For a laptop going abroad

Confirm the keyboard layout, software compatibility and destination warranty arrangements. Add delivery and any import costs to the comparison before deciding.

A simple inspection plan

If you can inspect the laptop, test the keyboard, trackpad, camera, speakers, wireless connection and charging port. Ask the seller how battery condition is described and what its grading actually covers. Cosmetic condition and internal health are different questions. Request confirmation that previous accounts and management locks have been removed. Keep the listing and invoice, including the exact memory and storage configuration. Before buying for someone abroad, check how a return would physically get back to the seller and who would pay for it.
