Describe the everyday use
List the tasks your current device struggles with. A purchase should solve a real problem, whether that is calls, reading, study or working away from a desk.
Compare exact versions
Check model number, storage, connectivity and included accessories. Similar product names can hide differences, so save the exact listing you compare.
Include the extras
Think about cables, cases, subscriptions, setup and repairs. Add only costs you have checked, and leave uncertain costs clearly marked.
Keep a short list

Make a shortlist you can explain
Write three tasks the device must handle and three things that would merely be nice to have. Compare the exact model and configuration against those needs. Include chargers, adapters, software and a sensible backup plan in the budget. Think about the person using the device: screen size, keyboard layout, accessibility and available support can matter more than a headline specification. If an older model does everything needed, compare its condition and support position with a newer alternative before deciding.
